Abby bent her head. 'There's just one thing . . .'

'Well?'

'How will Matt get to school? I don't suppose there's a school bus.'

'I thought I'd have a word with the Crofts,' replied Piers, slowing for a road junction. 'Their eldest son is a day boy, and I believe Sarah runs him to school in the morning and collects him every afternoon. I'm sure she'd have no objection to picking up Matthew on her way.'

'Sarah Croft?' Abby queried. Sarah had been one of the few friends she had had when she and Piers had got married.

'I thought you'd approve of her,' remarked Piers dryly. 'Robert, her boy, will be about six months younger than Matthew.'

Abby inclined her head. 'Sarah Croft,' she murmured again. 'It will be nice to see Sarah again.'

'She wrote to you, didn't she? After you left Rothside? She once told me that. She also told me you didn't reply.'

'No.' Abby drew an unsteady breath. 'I didn't think there was much point.'

'Why not?'

'Oh—the Crofts were really your friends, not mine. And—well, I suppose I was—embarrassed.'

'Embarrassed!'

'Don't pretend you don't understand.' Abby's voice was husky. 'How could I go on being friendly with Sarah, when no one knew about the baby?'
